Biography

Sophie Callan SC was appointed Senior Counsel in 2020, having successfully established a broad practice which includes the forensic nuances of commercial disputes, evidentiary rigours of criminal trials (including appearing for the Crown in the corruption prosecution of Ian Macdonald, Edward Obeid, and Moses Obeid), and the dexterity required for inquests/inquiries (including appearing as counsel assisting in the Lindt Siege inquest).

She has garnered a reputation for clear legal thinking, courteous and effective advocacy, hard work and trustworthiness. For this reason, she is often briefed in sensitive, complex and novel matters. And she is known for her provisions of coherent and timely advice to instructing solicitors and effective communication with clients, sensitive to the pressures of litigation.

Sophie’s reputation as a leader in criminal/disciplinary law, and her energy and breadth of practice is also reflected in her appointment as a reserve legal officer in the Royal Australian Air Force to the role of Judge Advocate and Defence Force Magistrate.
