Jill commenced at the private bar in May 2019. She previously practised as a barrister for two years when working as Counsel Assisting the NSW Solicitor General and Crown Advocate, during which time she appeared in the High Court of Australia, the NSW Court of Appeal and the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal. She has also appeared in the NSW Supreme Court, the NSW District Court and other courts and tribunals.
Jill has significant experience providing advice in criminal law, constitutional law, administrative law and regulatory matters. Questions on which she has advised include complex issues of statutory construction, prospects of success in prosecutions and appeals, the scope and exercise of statutory and prerogative powers and the sufficiency of evidence to lay charges.
Jill’s previous experience includes working as Special Counsel of the Criminal Law and Inquiries Practice Group at the Crown Solicitor’s Office of NSW; A/Assistant Crown Solicitor and a Senior Solicitor in the Criminal Law and Constitutional and Native Title Law Teams at the Crown Solicitor’s Office; a Legal Adviser to the NSW Director and Deputy Directors of Public Prosecutions; a Principal Legal Officer at the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing; and a Solicitor in the Administrative Law Team at the Crown Solicitor’s Office and at the Australian Government Solicitor. She was also an Associate to the Honourable Justice Murray Wilcox of the Federal Court of Australia.
