Joanne appears in the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, Federal Court and High Court as well as Commissions of Inquiry in areas including insolvency, financial services, regulatory, equity, corporations and commercial law. Most recently she appeared in the High Court, led by N.C. Hutley SC, on behalf of the successful appellants in Walton v ACN 004 410 833 Limited (formerly Arrium Limited) (in liquidation) [2022] HCA 3 (16 February 2022) in a case concerning the examinations power under the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth). She also recently appeared, unled, for a former senior officer of Crown Resorts Limited in each of the Crown state inquiries comprising the Inquiry under section 143 of the Casino Control Act 1992 (NSW) (the Bergin Inquiry), the Royal Commission into the Casino Operator and Licence (Finkelstein Inquiry) and the Perth Casino Royal Commission. Joanne also appears for and advises ASIC in civil penalty proceedings including in Australian Securities and Investments Commission v MLC Nominees Pty Ltd [2020] FCA 1306, led by T Faulkner SC, in which ASIC obtained its highest recorded civil penalty of $57.5 million.
