Peter Hastings was admitted as a barrister in 1977 and practices at Twelfth Floor, Selborne Chambers in Phillip Street. He has been a Queens Counsel since 1992.
He specialises in criminal and administrative law and has extensive experience in a wide range of criminal cases, but particularly in relation to Commonwealth offences, including fraud, narcotics and corporations matters, in jurisdictions from the High Court to the Local Court.
He appeared on behalf of the New South Wales Commissioner of Police during the Wood Royal Commission and before the Police Integrity Commission. He has been involved in enquiries conducted by statutory bodies such as the former National Crime Authority, Independent Commission Against Corruption and the New South Wales Crime Commission, and the Police Integrity Commission.
He has been a member of the New South Wales Bar Association Education Committee (and its Examinations Sub-Committee and Bar Practice Course Sub-Committee) and of a Bar Association Professional Conduct Committee as well as a member of the Silks' Selection Committee. He also acts as the Chair of the Appeals Committee of the New South Wales AFL Commission.
He was Senior Counsel Assisting the Kennedy Royal Commission into the West Australian Police Service from 2002 to 2004, the report of which was delivered on 30 January 2004, and tabled in the West Australian Parliament on 2 March 2004.
